Filing Status Definitions:
Qualifying surviving spouse: Filing a joint return with the deceased spouse for the year of his or her death.
Head of Household: Unmarried and have one or more dependents. The head of household status can claim a roughly 50% larger standard deduction than single filers.
Here’s what you will need to have available to use this tool:
Latest paycheck stub(s) or total gross amount(s) from:
Any jobs you’ve held in the current calendar year—but only if you work more than one job at the same time
Any jobs your spouse has held in the current calendar year if you are married and filing jointly
Dependent info. Make sure you know how many dependents you can claim. If you have children, you must determine which parent will include them as dependents on their W-4 form. There will be taxes owed if you both include them.
